Classic Monday’s is a feature I used to every Monday believe it or not and I’ve decided to bring it back. I used to just celebrate all things urban however this time around I want to throw in tracks which were the soundtrack to my younger teen life – I’m talking classic pop records!

I’m not going to hold back at all kicking off with a great pop track from 2004 – find out what it is on Monday… ooh the suspense!

AND THE SHORTS ARE OUT
March 27, 2012, 6:10 pm

After much debate between my hand being stuck out of my bedroom window and my brain I decided today was the day for shorts to be worn, however my hand feeling the temperature outside wasn’t enough for me to make this huge decision on so naturally I headed to my Twitter page to ask my fellow friends, the response was a no brainer – the shorts were coming out.

It was a really nice day in London, I spent the afternoon finishing off some writing in Green Park with my friend Laura Thompson and ate a cray fish salad and a strawberry cornetto but best of all, my legs felt the warm (with the occasional bit of wind) summers air. I’ve just watched the weather report on TV and apprently the sun will be gone by the weekend – I’ve peaked to early with the shorts so that will be it until May probably, live goes on.

WRITING, WRITING, GETTING DISTRACTED, WRITING

Some of you may wonder what exactly I do when I’m not recording my podcast which is, after all, only released every two weeks. Well, there is always a billion things happening behind the scenes. My mind is like a machine that you can’t turn off, I can’t physically switch it off myself. Ideas are constantly being thrown around inside my head and then being copied down on paper.

I am still very dedicated and focused on working towards a radio show, you will know how passionate I am about radio if you’ve followed my journey for long enough. I had a year stint on BBC Radio 1Xtra back at the end of 2009 to the end of 2010. It was surrel, I probably wasn’t ready for such a big task being just 16 at the time. The industry is very hard to describe to someone who hasn’t experienced it, but take my word for it that it is a very weird ‘thing’.

So what am I working on? Well, since working on Down With Dionne with Dionne Bromfield last year I have found a new love for presenting in front of the camera. The show with Dionne was my first time ever doing it and I loved it. I am currently working with a very talented young female presenter and writing some really exciting TV projects, hopefully some you will get to actually see, others you will probably never hear of.

I’ve never really written something like this before. TV is a whole new world. I have to think about themes, colours, logistics, story, concept, characters and everything else that goes into a TV show. It is a lot of fun and a real challenge, something totally different to anything I’ve experienced or worked on before. I’m finding it quite relaxing actually. It’s nice not to have too much pressure on anything, I’m not doing this for anyone but myself, no one has asked me to write these it’s all on my own terms which is great, though I do sometimes get side tracked. Today, for example I met with my ‘co writer’ and for about 3 hours we talked on something completeley irrelevant to anything we were meant to be doing – must be tough being a full time writer!

Thanks for sticking with me. I promise I’ve got some really great stuff to show you this year!

THOMAS COXHEAD INTERVIEW

On Monday I recorded this phone interview with blogger Thomas Coxhead who runs The House of Coxhead. This interview was actually for a university project I’m working on based around bloggers. It’s proving to be a very interesting journey so far with so many different types of blogs and so many reasons why people are blogging. I’ll probably post the final product up on here in a few weeks time.

WHAT A YEAR

Well today was one I’ve been waiting on for a long while now, my last day at Birmingham city university. For those who follow me on twitter and who have checked this site in the past you will probably know that my first year at uni hasn’t been the nicest experience for me. To be honest its been a constant emotional struggle, it sounds stupidly dramatic but I guess we all experience things differently and the situations I was put in and was surrounded by wasn’t one I was willing to continue with and so decided to move to a university in London next year. This is the perfect plan for me, not only will I be able to live at home but I’ll be able to work in London without having to turn down work or commute 2 hours from Birmingham. Come September I’ll be the new boy, joining a group who have had a year to get to know each other but I’m excited for the new adventure if not a little nervous – for now though 3 months of Summer holidays has begun and boy am I ready for whats in store…

MY YOUNG LIFE AS A DJ
February 23, 2011, 5:30 pm

Today I’ve spent a good three hours in my bedroom at uni sitting on my chair at my desk listening to some mixes which I have recorded and downloaded from DJ Swerve’s show on KISS FM and it got me thinking.

I think this is just an excuse to blog about my favourite DJ but I’m not sure, let’s see where this goes.

For those that don’t know, I’m a DJ. When I started out DJing there was no one saying “hey kids, want to be a DJ? Here’s how..” infact, there still isn’t and there never will be, it’s about experience, passion and fighting your way through this fierce industry. I started life as a DJ from the age of 8 or 9 in my bedroom mixing together tapes, or more fading them into each other (I didn’t have a clue what mixing was back then) from that I got the bug for music and recieved a karaoke machine as a present. On the machine there was a tape recorder, I got my mum to buy a load of recordable tapes and off I went, pretending I was a DJ on the radio. I used to pretend I was a presenter on Capital FM, back then it was the station my mum would listen to in the car with the likes of Chris Tarrent and Steve Penk – not DJ’s but presenters. From these recordings I decided to pretend I had my own radio station, I called it UK FM and Street FM.

UK FM was the Capital FM of my fake radio world with Street FM being the KISS 100. I loved doing this and did it for a good few years from my bedroom eventually recording myself onto CD’s.

Anyway, where am I going with this. I’m not actually sure but I just became quite reminiscent of my childhood today and the beginnings of my career.

DJ Swerve was always at the front of this, though he didn’t know it at the time. I used to listen to his show every Tuesday night between 9 and 11pm and this was my source of what the latest Hip Hop and R&B records were. Within the show was two 20 minute mixes every hour, the first at 9.20 and the second at 10.20, these would be my 20 minutes of zone out time every week where I would listen to every detail of the mix from the transition to the track selection, BPM, juggles and every scratch and cut he made. From years of listening to Swerve I built my own mixing style, not from copying him but from developing ideas he gave me and giving it my own spin. I was such a geek, I could listen to his mixes and know when he would start a juggle, do a scratch, bring a track back and start a mix into the next song – yes, total nerd. Not to meantion I would text into his show every week so he knew I was listening – god I was a right groupie.

After bombarding Swerve with messages on MySpace at least 4 times a week I finally met the man himself at Market Bar just off Oxford Street. There was a DJ competiton which I had entered but not been selected for, I went down anyway and I watched Swerve do a live set and was blown away. I think I was 12 or 13 by this time.

When I was 15 I entered a competiton called “Are You The CK One” it was essentially a chance for DJ’s to showcase their skills infront of Swerve and DMC Champion DJ Rafik. It was sponsered by Calvin Klein and DMC. I was by far the youngest person there with the rest being 20-30 so I was nervous but still thought I had a chance to win, sure enough after showcasing a 10 minute set I did win, £1000 in fact, not bad for a 15 year old. The funny thing was that Swerve marked me down because he knew me, more that I was a weird groupie fan.

I started out with so many crazy DJ names it was stupid, I told my best mate if he thought up a name I’d pay him, he said DJ WM, I never did pay him but I took the name. I went under DJ WM for sooo many years, probably too many. That was until I started working for the BBC and the name had to go, thank God, that was one of the best things I’ve done and I’d probably still have that name now if it wasn’t for my then manager talking sense to me after speaking to 1Xtra. Will Manning was born.

It’s become clear in recent years that mixes with juggles and scratches on radio specialist commercial shows are less and less important as the listener just doesn’t understand what on earth the DJ is doing and gets bored of hearing a 4 bar juggle or some crazy cuts. Shows such as CJ Beatz on BBC Radio 1Xtra are keeping this alive for me and at least these recordings will live on through my iTunes.

So I’m still not sure why I’ve said these things I just thought I’d share some things I did before I was even 18. Theres so much I’ve done up to now but I wanted to meantion how I started out, the most common question I get is “how can I start out as a DJ?” so I hope this shines some inspiration to some of you.

I hope In a few years I can write another post similar about all the amazing things I’m doing now with touring, radio presenting, TV shows, interviews and sitting in a bedroom and Birmingham City University with the rain pouring down outside.
Thank you.

My girlfriend and I do our Valentines Day on the 12th. This year, seeing as we both love Yo Sushi we made chicken katsu curry, chicken teryaki, prawn tempura, miso soup and my surprise desert was chocolate heart brownies with homemade rasberry ripple ice cream. Try and beat it if you want.

Where have I been for the past few days? I don’t even know myself to be honest. I was DJing on Friday night and then it was a new week, no idea whats happened in between, maybe I’ve just become a recluse over the past few days. This is what I can remember doing:

Watching Ricky Gervais Science on DVD – Actually amazing, funnier than I remember it when I saw it live.

Started playing Assasins Creed 2 which I’m not sure about yet.

And er… erm.. I… OH, I keep trying to re connect my PS3 to the Playstation Network because It won’t connect for some reason and that is it. Living life to the fullest.

A BIG THANK YOU!

MY 2010 ROUND-UP

Much like 2009 this year was brilliant for music from US and mainly it has to be said from right here on my homeland of the UK. I love this part of the year where I can reflect on not only my personal highlights but also look back at all the amazing music that my ears have been lucky enough to hear.

Below are my personal views on what has been hot this year.

Album of The Year

There have been so many albums released this year but only a few really hit the spot with me, below are the list of the main releases and my winner.

Lil Wayne – Rebirth
Two Door Cinema Club – Tourist History
Ludacris – Battle of The Sexes
Professor Green – Alive Till I’m Dead
Usher – Raymond vs Raymond
Erykah Badu – New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)
B.o.B – The Adventures of Bobby Ray
Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom
Mike Posner – 31 Minutes to Take Off
Kano – Method To The Madness
Eminem – Recovery
Example – Won’t Go Quietly
Trey Songz – Passion Pain Pleasure
John Legend & The Roots – Wake Up
Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy
Devlin – Bud, Sweat & Beers
Rihanna – Loud
Cee-Lo Green – Lady Killer
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday
Jazmine Sullivan – Love Me Back

Winner:

Ellie Goulding – Lights

For me, my year was all about this album, each song has played such a huge part in almost every month of my life this year. Everything about this album blew me away from the vocals, production to the live stage show. Ellie Goulding deserves album of the year for me hands down.

MY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

It’s been a busy and brilliant weekend for me as Friday was my birthday! Yes I turned 19 on the 10th and spent the whole weekend enjoying it.

On Friday my girlfriend surprised me and arrived at my house 7 hours earlier than she had told me she would, I then had my family from Manchester down and we all went out for a lovely meal in the evening.

Saturday I was taken to the Natural History Museum for a spot of ice skating – hadn’t done it in a while and I was actually quite good if I can say (which I can) then we went to Fire & Stone in Covent Garden who do THE best pizzas ever, we had a Christmas special aka turkey, stuffing, potato, sausage and cranberry sauce – amazing.

Sunday was all about Harrords – a Christmas tradition in my family, bought some amazing food bits and looked at things I can’t afford and then went home to watch Christmas films and enjoy my Grandads amazing cooking skills (photo evidence below)

Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday!

HELLO DECEMBER!
December 3, 2010, 12:42 am

At last one of my favourite months has arrived, not that I was in a rush or anything but I love December for all the obvious reasons – Christmas, family, advent calender amazing-er food than usual, hot chocolate, presents, spending too much money and never regretting it, Christmas tree goes up, Coca Cola advert, snow, warm clothes, holiday, a chance to reflect on the year and my birthday on the 10th!

I meantioned the advent calenders and I have to say, without trying to sound like an ungreatful idiot – I was a bit gutted I didn’t get my favourite Dairy Milk one but maybe next year.

As the year is coming to an end there will be a few special posts with some 2010 look backs and some 2011 look forwards so keep coming back and there will also be a very special 2010 in the mix podcast coming on the 19th!

Happy December!
